Downed Power Lines Burn Along Route 23
On Monday, October 21, 2024, at 11:48, companies were dispatched to Route 23 South near Kearny Bank for the report of a brush fire. Upon arrival, it was found that a high voltage wire had come loose and fallen on the ground, causing a fire involving the surrounding grass and trees. While waiting for the utility company to arrive and secure the power, Engine 1-4’s crew noticed light haze and a burning odor coming from inside Kearny Bank and took actions to secure the electrical panel and prevent back feeding. After securing the building's power, it was determined that the structure was no longer threatened. Once the main power was cut by JCP&L, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service arrived on scene and extinguished the spreading fire. The scene was cleared by all fire units by 13:24.
